informations about the holiday home

The farm house was partially built during the 17th century. It has now been tastefully restored and furnished. There are two special and stylishly furnished apartments available for your exclusive holiday. The estate itself is located on the hillside of the Colline Metallifere, amidst the stunning landscape of Tuscan Maremma. Surrounded by olive groves and a delightfully created garden, the place offers a breath-taking panoramic view of Massa Marittima, the Gulf of Follonica and the islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

In this very unique location, far away from mass tourism trails, you can enjoy tranquillity, which is only broken by the nightingale’s song. The 38 hectare area offers uninterrupted relaxation and allows you to take walks in an untouched landscape. Afterwards you can luxuriate in the well-tended pool area: a place specifically designed for relaxation!

The 80m² apartment Mimosa is on the first floor, and also has its own separate entrance. It has two bedrooms (one with an open fireplace), two bathrooms, a kitchen and a spacious living room with dining area and a fireplace. A portico gives you access to a private terrace with a sea view.

The numerous lovely villages in the Maremma countryside also offer exquisite cuisine and outstanding hospitality.
The Gulf of Follonica, with its appealing seaside locations, is only 20km away. It was awarded the bandiera blu (blue flag) for its well-tended beaches with Italian flair, and crystal-clear water. A large number of sports facilities will make your holiday even more entertaining! Have a good time playing golf, horseback riding, cycling, sailing, and sailboarding!

Our olive trees – mainly the cultivar Moraiolo and a small percentage of other Tuscan varieties – are cultivated at a height of approximately 350m, on the hillside of Monte Arsenti in the Massa Marittima area. No chemical pesticides are used.

Quality comes before quantity, and thus every year we begin the harvest as soon as possible in October. The olives are picked by hand only.

The oil is produced within a couple of hours. This is done with all possible care, to a high technical standard and by mechanical means only. The oil extraction takes place in a prize-winning oil-mill in the locality. The oil is bottled on the estate.

The oil has a largely golden colour with hints of green. It has a typical intense, fruity scent, and presents piquancy and subtle bitterness, a characteristic of Tuscan olive oils. This combination creates a well-balanced and pleasing product of highest quality.

Massa Marittima is a little known jewel box of medieval architecture.

Extraordinary monuments and interesting museums offer a wide range of sightseeing possibilities. Numerous bars and gelaterie will make your city tour a pleasant and entertaining experience. The cafés on Piazza Garibaldi invite you to stop and enjoy the lively atmosphere of one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany.

Twice a year the old town is the stage for a Renaissance festival, the so called Balestro del Girifalco. The historic crossbow tournament in Renaissance costumes takes place on the last Sunday in May and the second Sunday in August. The Calici di stelle, an annual wine festival, showcasing the remarkable wines of the region, and offering you the opportunity to enjoy notable performances of Italian opera on the main square, also takes place in August.

The lovely Piazza Garibaldi is the square at the centre of the Città vecchia, the old town with the cathedral. This Romanesque-gothic Church, constructed in the first half of the 13th century, is dedicated to Saint Cerbonius and impresses with its very unique position on a podium with stairs, which faces the square diagonally. Palazzo Pretorio (the modern Archaeological museum, decorated with the crests of the successive podestà of the city), Palazzo Comunale (the town hall), and Loggia del Comune also face on to the irregularly shaped square. The nearby 13th century Palazzo dell’Abbondanza (Palace of Abundance), once used as a granary, with the famous fresco showing the tree of fertility, is worth a visit.

A steep, narrow street leads to the 14th century castle outside the city walls, the impressive Arco Senese(1337) as well as to the Città nuova. The new town was constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries and is notable for its perfectly geometric structures. It is one of the earliest examples of Tuscan city planning. Parts of the new town include the church and cloister of Saint Augustine. A walk on the city walls will offer a striking panoramic view of the Maremma landscape and the Gulf of Follonica.

We would like to invite you to take a guided city tour, in order to get to know this charming town and its fascinating history. We also encourage you to take an aperitif afterwards, and enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere and dolce far niente.

The Maremma offers a wide range of interesting excursions. The capital of the province, Grosseto is 40km away. The city is not only interesting for its architectural sights, but also offers good shopping in the city centre. The nearby nature reserve, Parco dell’Uccellina and the beaches of Castiglione della Pescaia are also worth a visit.

The towns of Sorano, Sovana, and especially Pitigliano in the southern Tuscan area, are likewise well worth seeing. These settlements were founded by the Etruscans and are built on tuff plateaus high above the river valleys.

To get to know Etruscan culture, a visit of one of the numerous necropolises in the Maremma is recommended. Particularly interesting is the archaeological Park of Populonia, which houses a remarkable collection of archaeological finds, and is located right on the lovely beach of Golfo di Baratti, one of the most beautiful bays of the Tuscan seaside. Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Campiglia Marittima and Suvereto are not far from there.

Numerous charming little villages, where time seems to stand still, can be found in the untouched landscape of the Colline Metallifere:Montieri, Prata, Roccatederighi – to mention but a few.

The Maremma, however, is not just famous for historic architecture. Some outstanding examples of modern architecture can also be found here: the wine cellar Rocca di Frassinello, built by Renzo Pianoand the winery Petra by Mario Botta, for example.

Speaking of wine, the Maremma area is one of the emerging Italian wine regions. Bolgheri is an internationally known appellation. Morellino di Scansano, a red wine made of Sangiovese grapes, and recently denominated DOCG, also enjoys an excellent reputation.
If you are interested, we will gladly organise a wine-tasting in one of the wine growing estates in the area.

A unique place of destination is the Giardino dei Tarocchi by Niki de Saint Phalle. These huge sculptures by the aforementioned French artist represent Tarot cards.
