Autumn in Tuscany is a wonderful season: the air is crisp, the hills glow in warm colours, and almost every village hosts a fair, festival or local food event. Travelling in November means experiencing the region’s authentic soul – far from the summer crowds, close to everyday Tuscan life.
In November, there’s always a tough choice of which festival, sagra or local event to visit.
Lucca Comics & Games
The month starts with a highlight: Lucca Comics & Games. It’s known as a paradise for young people, but it’s also a fantastic experience for families, children and adults alike.
The city is crowded, but a walk along the city walls and through the streets is truly special. Everywhere you see elaborate costumes inspired by comics and films – a unique atmosphere that fills the whole town.
Garfagnana Terra Unica
The following two weekends are dedicated to one of my favourite events: Garfagnana Terra Unica in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
What makes it special is that the dishes are prepared by small associations from the villages of the Garfagnana. The menu changes every weekend (except for a few classics), and there’s also a local producers’ market, live music and plenty of activities around the festival.
Markets and Wine Festivals
On the second Sunday of the month, the large flea market in Vico Pisano takes place. When the market is on, the old fortress is open to visitors, and guided tours are available.
In Pistoia, a wine festival takes place on 8–9 November, and there are other flea markets in Prato, Pistoia and Lucca.
On the 15–16 November weekend, Lucca hosts its flea market, followed by a craft market on 22–23 November.
Olive Oil, Camellias and Chestnuts
In Buti, you can taste the new olive oil inside the castle this weekend. On the other side of Monte Pisano, in Sant’Andrea, the Camellia Gardens are open – the camellias are in bloom right now, and many frantoi (olive mills) welcome visitors.
Chestnut festivals take place almost every weekend in November – a perfect chance to try necci or castagnaccio with a glass of red wine. Keep an eye out for local posters, as many events aren’t even advertised online.
Experience Tuscany Like a Local
Whenever there’s a local festivity, it’s worth taking a stroll – maybe a church or villa that’s usually closed is open, or you’ll discover a hidden gem.
Autumn is the perfect time to experience Tuscany like a local: enjoy daily life, chat with residents in a small bar, and take in the calm, authentic atmosphere.
The autumn colours are breathtaking, and the light has a unique warmth this time of year.
And if it happens to rain, you can still visit the Beato Angelico exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (on until January 2026) – or explore the Museum of Ancient Ships in Pisa.
An autumn holiday in Tuscany is full of discoveries, flavours and genuine encounters. Between wine, chestnuts, olive oil and local traditions, you’ll experience the region at its most authentic – warm, colourful and unhurried.
